A trenchless technology is used to lay down new pipelines or cables. The use of trenchless technology enables to avoid environmental destruction (asphalt paving, sidewalks are not destroyed, trees, other green areas are preserved), street closures and costs of restoration works. This technology enables to cut down considerably on construction time.
Trenchless technology methods:
- Horizontal guided directional drilling – this method is used to lay down new engineering communications without any need to unearth the ground, in big distances, complicated grounds and hardly accessibly places (under roads, buildings, trees, rivers, etc.). A mechanism drills a tunnel of required diameter under the ground and inserts new pipes of adequate size. An operator regulates the direction and depth of boring using a probe.
- Renovation – this method is applied to renovate existing pipelines by unearthing the ground to the minimum extent. Using hydraulic equipment different types of old pipes are broken down. Then, a tunnel is formed with a special widener, and a new plastic pipe is inserted.
- Microtunneling – is a method to make metal micro-tunnels by unearthing the ground to the minimum extent. The method is especially relevant for installing underground communications in protective casings under busy highways, tracks and pedestrian roads, or buildings. Near the place where a micro-tunnel must be installed, air-powered equipment is mounted in the dug-out pit which drives in a thick-walled metal pipe in the necessary direction using compressed air. The inside of the driven-in pipe is cleaned with compressed air and water.
- Closed passage – this method is used to lay down pipelines under the ground, road paving, tracks and superstructures by unearthing the ground to the minimum extent. After a tunnel of required size is made under the ground by way of driving or pushing, a plastic pipe is inserted.
